How Old Is The Game Of Darts

Darts is a game that has never been out of fashion. Focus, concentration and control is what makes someone click at this indoor zeal. Casino or pub, any part of the world, Dartboard is the main highlight of the night.
The documented history may be limited for this game but the dartboard may have its beginning from the cross-section of a tree. The archaic name for dartboard is a “butt”, which could have been derived from the bottoms of wine barrels, which were the earliest dartboards. The word itself may have origins in the French word “butte” meaning target.

There are various categories of dartboards and they vary on the basis of their size and areas to target upon. There is another theory that the game might have roots in soldiers throwing short arrows at the bottom of the cask or trunks of trees; to strengthen their aim and to form a recreational activity.

Gradually, with wood drying, sections used to start emerge on the boards. Later due to its popularity in pubs, woodworkers started fabricating to make eye catching and fancy. The recent standard with 20 on top (which is widely played upon) was created in 1896 by a Lancashire carpenter named Brian Gamlin. Though there were many other configurations widely in use with respect to geographical varieties. Gamlin’s devised procedure was particularly famous as it used to penalize inaccuracy. Many other formats for beginners is relaxed on the idea of penalty. There are even many mathematical papers published that suggest an optimized version of dartboard.

Prior to World War, the British pubs used to form dartboards through solid wood blocks of elm. After being soaked overnight for recovering (from the holes made from darts) the dartboard would often become a messy task for the publican. The first innovation occurred when a modeling clay company called Nodor (no odor clay) made their first dartboard. But the major development in the idea came when someone made the first sisal fibres dartboard. Bundles of sisal fibres of small and same length, were tied together and compressed onto a disk of metal ring. This dartboard was an instant success, as no maintenance was required. When a dart would hit, the spaces in the fibre just parted and resumed when the dart was taken out.

The current dartboards are also made of same material, while the less expensive ones are built of coiled paper. Hence, today many countries produce dartboards with various sisal fibre types manufactured in Brazil, East Africa and China.

The standard board is 17.75 inches in diameter and is sectioned in 29 radial divides. Each section is partitioned with metal or bands of sheet metal. The premium dartboards comprise of thinnest wire, so that there are less chances of ricochet and darts bouncing off. The numbers on the board are also often made of metal wires, particularly on pro-level quality boards, but may be printed directly on the board depending on personal preferences and fancies.

Dart is an ever green game, for all age and income groups. Its future is as rich as it’s history, hope we keep having fun like our past generations did.
