Hunting History – How It Grew To A Multibillion Dollar Industry

People in most cultures began hunting several centuries ago as the only means of survival. It was one of the myriad ways to make a living. Later, animals were domesticated to serve human purposes, and people only engaged in hunting for the sheer joy of it. For the wealthy, hunting became a status symbol. Today, hunting has become a multibillion dollar industry in which government, private, and corporate policies are involved.

Hunting requires a lot of patience, skill, and high regard for one’s prey and its natural habitat. Primitive hunting involved chasing a prey till it was exhausted and then bringing it down with a sharp-tipped spear. An animal could be killed only if it was close to the hunter. Later, sophisticated weapons allowed hunters to bring down their prey even if it was at a long distance from them. Hunting became not only safer, but also more successful.

Hunting enables people to get close to nature. Federal and state laws and organizations work hand in hand to enable the continuance of human interaction with nature, as it has taken place for centuries. But, hunting has an impact on the delicate balance of nature, and to prevent this exciting hobby from having a disastrous effect on nature, hunters have to follow all the rules and regulations set by the state. Native Americans, however, have different hunting rights because hunting certain types of animals is part of their culture.

Hunting has become not only a great way to spend one’s leisure, but also a means to manage wildlife. However, hunting animals to manage wildlife requires continuous scientific study and the use of controlled, sophisticated methods. These methods prevent hunters from bringing down too many or too few animals.

Hunting is one of the major sources of national income. A number of countries depend on the revenue obtained from not only hunting activities, but also the tourism industry that thrives on people’s love for hunting. Organizing hunting expeditions is now a part of the tourism industry and is fast gaining popularity. Many African countries, for example, have thriving tourism agencies that arrange exciting hunting adventures for hunting enthusiasts.

Hunting wild animals in an exotic location is a unique experience that many hunters crave. Such economic activities provide a lot of revenue for a country, in addition to providing income for local villagers who become guides, camp hosts, trackers, and other employees in the tourism industry.
