How to be Comfortable, Safe and Look Good When Cycling in Extreme Events

Recently I took part in an organised cycling event called The Exmoor Beast.I managed to  complete the gruelling “short” course (70 miles of extremely hilly cycling over Exmoor) and during the 6 hours I was in the saddle, I had plenty of opportunity to observe what other cyclists were wearing and now feel well qualified to comment on appropriate wear for such an event.

There were over 1000 competitors for this challenging event and so I had plenty of opportunity to see a vast variety of clothing worn by my fellow cyclists.  Being an Image Consultant I was interested in colour as well as the technical value of the kit on display.

Some of the elite athletes taking part wore specialist cycling clothing in an array of bright coloured jerseys. These outfits are designed specifically for cycling and make the rider more aerodynamic as well as warm and comfortable.  There is such a wide choice of colours that everybody would be in a position to find their perfect colour.  This type of clothing is available from specialist cycle shops and from the internet.

The lesser mortals amongst us, such as me, were dressed in a variety of comfortable and heat efficient clothing and some were just wearing shorts and an anorak.  The single most apparent colour amongst the competitors was florescent yellow.  Although it is not a particularly flattering colour for most people, it does make the wearer highly visible.

When competing in endurance competitions such as the Exmoor Beast, wearing sufficiently warm and comfortable clothing is essential.  Probably the single most important item is a pair of padded shorts!  The weather on Exmoor can change dramatically, but on Sunday we were lucky.  It was a dull day, but dry and not too cold, except when exposed to the strong winds.  I wore three thin layers, the inner one being a sports specific t-shirt that keeps you dry how ever much you sweat and the outer layer being breathable and waterproof.  The outer layer was the perfect turquoise blue, that suits my auburn hair and made me very visible, another essential on a dull November day as mentioned above.  I have to admit to my socks and inner two shirts being a perfect red for my colouring, even though they were not visible on the day, I just can’t help it!

As I am an amateur cyclist, I was just pleased to have completed the course before it got dark and enjoy the comradely atmosphere of so many people enjoying a day out.  I can hardly express my admiration for the elite cyclists, who completed the 100 mile course in less than 5 hours and just hope that I can improve on my time next year.  My comfort is that I may not be the fastest cyclist but I was wearing colours that suited me!

Whilst safety and comfort are ofcourse essential, there is no reason why you cannot look good wearing flattering colours that suit your natural colouring.

Glock Firing Pins Ever So Reliable

If your pistol is not working up to your expectations and you think it should be disposed off, then think again. It is most likely that its firing pin is not performing up to the mark. The firing pin is a crucial part of the firing mechanism of every firearm. It strikes the primer of the cartridge, which thus detonates the priming compound to ignite the propellant. It is important to have a good firing pin for a gun to perform well. Firing pins typically have a small, rounded end, which wears out over a period of time. That’s what must have happened in the case of your pistol. So, it is time you change the firing pin of your pistol.

Gun firing pins should be light to strike the primer easily. They are made from light material so that the pin travels at a high speed thereby reducing the lock time (Lock time is the time between trigger pull and the bullet leaving the barrel.) And, it is round at the end so that the primer is indented instead of pierced. There is also an internal mechanism to block the firing pin till the trigger is pressed.

Glock is a leading manufacturer of hunting tools like pistols, handguns, field knives, and so on. It also offers a variety of gun parts like firing pins and springs as well as shooting accessories.Glock firing pins are reliable and they need low maintenance.

If your pistol might not be performing properly of late, it perhaps needs a Glock firing pin. Get one today and you will feel that you are shooting with a newly-bought pistol. But if you own a Glock pistol, keep in mind that the replacement of the firing pin should be done only by a Glock-certified armorer and not anyone else. (It is always better to consult a qualified armorer if you are having any problems with your firearm.)

Bow Hunting – Natural Way Of Hunting

Hunting with a Bow is quite a famous sport; there are a few things a novice bow hunter should learn before getting into the thrilling game of bow hunting. First is to learn about laws and regulations of hunting in different states as hunting seasons and laws vary from one State to other. To get information about a particular state, get in touch with game and fish commission or similar agencies to ensure the exact rule, season of hunting, and state laws. A hunting license is compulsory in every state with exception for some private hunting clubs offering organized bow hunts.

Then learn everything you can about variety of bows that are available. Though the selection of bows, the type, and brand may differ as per the individual’s choice, a lot depends on the season, the animal you want to hunt, state and national rules regarding the hunt etc. There are hunting bows of four types

• Stick bow
• Recurve
• Compound bow
• Cross bow

The first is Stick bows. A stick bow is the long English bow. It is as high or may be slightly higher than a normal individual, in the shape of “D” and does not have a recurve.

The next is Recurves. The side view of a recurve bow shows the curve ending away from the shooter at the tip. This lends a bigger throw to the arrow.

Recurve bows are preferred on bow hunting because they are smaller than a normal stick bow and easier to handle while going through forest areas on horseback. .

Then comes the Compound Bow which is a modern bow. It is a normal bow constructed in combination with a technique of cams, cables and pulleys to give higher speed to arrow. It is essential to judge the draw weight and bow length of your choice and for this consult an expert. Bows are not one size fits all.

The fourth is Cross bow for target shooting and bow hunting. A cross bow is made of a stock on which the bow is fixed. An activated trigger on the stock shoots arrow like projectiles from the bow.

Once familiar with laws of hunting, and after completion of preconditioned requirements to hunt legally like licenses and safety courses in hunting, and selection of the right bow, then decide on the type of arrows to be used.

There are variety of arrows with long handles like cedar, aluminum and carbon. Choose which arrow handle will be best suited for your bow, where you will be hunting, what you will be hunting and if there are any government or hunt club rules to be followed. Ensure with an expert archery dealer, until you can select the arrows best for your bow hunting experience
